This full-circle story begins in 2005, when I was making jewelry and selling it locally in Dayton, Ohio, while working a corporate job. Ironically, the nice camera I bought to photograph my jewelry for a pretty terrible website ended up launching a 14-year photo and video career that took Mike and me all over the country – and sometimes beyond it – working together. Somewhere in the middle of all that, we were living in an RV for months at a time, adventuring in some pretty amazing places.
In 2019 I began making jewelry again. I created a few pieces (and a better website), and a small handmade jewelry brand was born. I chose the name Wild Roots because it captured two ideas that have always lived side by side for us: being wild and being rooted. Travel was such a huge part of our lives that I wanted it to be woven into my designs. I sold a few pieces here and there, and we began selling at festivals as we traveled around the country in our RV, drawing inspiration from our adventures along the way.
In March of 2020, the direction of Wild Roots changed in an unexpected way. One day, we were selling jewelry at a festival in Sedona, Arizona. The next, mid-festival, the entire world shut down. As the weeks went by, it became apparent that we wouldn’t be returning to our photography and film work for a while. So we decided the next logical step was to introduce Wild Roots to a wider audience online. I wasn’t entirely ready, but that’s how it goes sometimes.
Looking back, we didn’t know what we didn’t know. But I had envisioned a brand that would bring inspiration and a little of the feeling of travel to others – through the names, the designs, and the stories behind them. Six years later, Mike and I continue to grow the company around that same idea.
Travel has shaped our life for over a decade. We’ve spent months at a time exploring the country by camper, finding inspiration in national parks, small towns, local bead shops, and conversations with people along the way. We’ve designed pieces from the road, packed orders between adventures, and learned that the places we visit stay with us long after we leave.
During the spring and summer months, you’ll find us at our little summer cottage in the Laurel Highlands. Built in the late 1800s, It’s a place filled with incredible history, crooked walls, and a squeaky porch swing that sings in the evenings. Tucked in the woods, it’s alive with wildlife, wind in the trees, and the kind of quiet that fuels creativity. A haven when we aren’t roaming and somehow a destination in its own right.
And while we have a home base in Pennsylvania and two amazing employees, we are still making room for time on the road. Time away gives us fresh ideas; time at home gives those ideas space to become new designs. A little wild. A little rooted. Both are part of Wild Roots, and we’re continuing to build our brand – and our life – on our terms.
The messages we receive from customers are among our favorite parts of this work. You tell us where you’ve traveled, what a piece reminds you of, why you chose it, and how it makes you feel. Those stories have become part of Wild Roots, too. We hope those details stir a memory of your own—or remind you of somewhere you’ve always wanted to go.
Whether you’ve been with us for years or just found us, thank you for being here.
We’re so glad our paths crossed. ~Ali
